Blue Ginger, Mauritius by Obelix

Whilst in Ile Maurice, we stayed in one of the villas at Trou Aux Biches Resort & Spa, which as cliched as it might sound was like heaven on earth.  In Trou Aux Biches Resort itself are five restaurants which if you take full board, like we did, the meals were included in the price of the stay.  We had a lovely staff member who met us on our first morning to map out a menu plan for the duration of our stay to suit our taste and lifestyle.  I was very impressed by the careful consideration given to the suggestion of our meals.  One evening she suggested we sampled Thai cuisine at Blue Ginger.

Blue Ginger is located on a floating pavilion surrounded by a pond, lit up with fairy lights.  It was magical.  And romantic...

They served a set menu.  Whilst it appeared it was more a couple-y dining, salle intime sort of venue, they were quite accommodating to flex what they can on the set menu to cater for Kiddo.  They also served separate chicken and rice for the kids as an option.

This is a big call but P and I have agreed that it was the best Thai we have ever had.  So here's what it was:

A starter with beef strip Thai salad; chicken mince sesame toast and prawn.  The salad were crisp and the dressings were complex yet light at the same time.  The chicken sesame toast was a pleasant alternative to the sesame prawn toasts one normally gets.

A Tom Yum style soup.  It was sour and sweet and tangy and zingy and...  it was good.

One of the mains was a stir fried calamari with Thai basil and other piquant herbs.  It was so deliciously savoury, I wanted to drink the sauce.

Accompanying the mains was stir fried egg noodles with egg and veggies.

curry, duck, trou aux biches, beachcomber, blue ginger, thai cuisine
The piece de resistance according to P, was the duck curry.  He waxed lyrical about the tender chunks of duck breast within and the coconutty curry sauce with the pineapple pieces and tomatoes providing a tang.

But personally, I thought this was the piece de resistance, this sloppy gloop of coconut ice cream with a sauce that taste like concentrated toasted coconut or rather like the Malaysian Kaya coconut jam.  The sweetness was undercut by very tangy lime juice.  This was sublime.  I don't normally eat much dessert but I could happily have several serves of this.

Verdict

We loved it.

Overall

If you ever find yourself staying in Trou Aux Biches Resort, please I insist, book a dinner at Blue Ginger, you would not be disappointed.  I preferred Blue Ginger over the other restaurants in the resort but alas due to scheduling, we could only dine there one night of our stay.  I would happily return again and again.  In hindsight I would probably have booted Kiddo to dine at Kids Club and P & I would dine at Blue Ginger and really soak up the ambiance.
