La Musette, Glenelg (SA) by Big Fil

La Musette brings a warm glow to my sometimes jaded breakfast appreciation senses.  This is because its Francophile owners bring something to the table that so many other places lack.  It's not polish or cutting edge cuisine, that's not what La Musette is about.  Instead it's about the love they have for what they do, and the charming atmosphere of this charismatic café.

Part Café but also part Gallery, La Musette has somewhat of the feel of an elderly Aunt's place, the one who has been collecting knick knacks for years and displays them in her slightly disordered and overcrowded but comfortable drawing room.

The pictures for sale hanging on the walls and the little pieces of jewellery were very nice but what I really liked was the stag thermometer, which confirmed that while the day was sunny it was also too cold for us to sit outside.

The owners were previously bike riders themselves, and the biking community has obviously taken them to heart with most of the customers we saw dressed in various shades of lycra.

Bike rider cafes generally have a focus on good coffee.  Bike riders are a bit like taxi drivers in that respect - they share information and given their mobility around town congregate at the best places, not just their local.  I can't comment from personal experience as I am not a coffee drinker myself but Mrs S certainly enjoyed her long black siphon coffee.

The actual kitchen area is very small, one person preparing everything in an area large enough to swing a kitten but probably not a full grown cat.  Consequently if you get a group come in, always a possibility given bike riders normally travel in packs, you can be waiting a little while for your food.  Consequently it was nice to receive a cute plate containing two homemade complimentary biscuits to go with the coffee and my fruit smoothie (which was yummy but unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of).

Mrs S' choice for food was 'La Grand Disorde', which as I understand translates into The Big Mess.  Described as a deconstructed omelette (I think), served with bread and seeming to contain most of the vegetable garden it was delicious and filling in a real simple, fresh, home cooked kind of style.

My own choice was the banana pancakes, served with seasonal fruits.  The banana is included within the pancake mixture, the fruits (apricot and apple) topped with very nice cream.  The pancakes were nice and light, and while not as large a serving as the omelette perfectly satisfactory to satisfy a sweet tooth.

Overall
Not perfect but with so much personality I just had to love it.  A fun and relaxing place to just sit and pass the time with a couple of very friendly folks.  Just make sure you call to check the opening hours, as these seemed to be shorter for winter.

Verdict
Food - 8
Ambience - 8
Service - 7
Price - 7
